Are you a Manager or a Leader?

Are you a Manager or a Leader?

Have you ever given deep thought to the difference between being a manager and being a leader? Which are you?

Leaders influence people, while managers manage work. As Professor Danko and Lecturer Vroman point out, “successful manager sets goals and ensures their team’s work adheres to performance standards that tend to be measurable, whereas a leader defines a vision for the future. Managers are often risk-averse to ensure quality in the work they are responsible for is as good as they, themselves, could deliver. Leaders, on the other hand, espouse and enact value sets that their followers identify with, coaching and motivating others to act. They behave in a way that inspires others to follow them.”

The authors suggest you follow do the following":

  • Recognize and accept the situation & then act;

  • Foster positive deviance;

  • Empower your team; and

  • Be brave.

Businesses — and their people — need leaders .… those who can show the path forward and then stand out of the way.
